Sounds reasonable on the surface. But here's the reality:

• 21 million eligible U.S. citizens don't have easy access to these documents

• It would shut down online voter registration in 42 states

• It would end third-party voter registration drives — the kind that help seniors, students, and first-time voters get registered

• It would make voting harder for married women, rural voters, Native Americans, and military service members

Noncitizen voting in federal elections is already illegal. Violators face felony charges. This bill doesn't solve a real problem — it creates new ones for millions of real voters.

What Happened

After weeks of floor debate, the Senate failed to pass the SAVE Act in April 2026. At least 38 senators delivered speeches opposing it.
